Complaints from neighbors about odor spurred LA County Sanitation District to purchase Orion™ weather stations from Columbia Weather Systems -- seven since 2011 – sited at their water reclamation plants. CWS technician Kathryn Hammond spoke with Albert Mata at the Whittier Narrow Water Treatment Facility: “Albert installed the system. Loves it. Was easy to install.”
Carlos Alfaro, Supervisor of Treatment Plant Operations, gave Kathryn a tour, including the catwalk over the tank. (Whittier Narrows is an open tank wastewater treatment facility.)
At Whittier, they use primarily wind speed and direction parameters to help manage for odor based on complaints from the neighbors, as well as the possibility of chemical spills. Using an Allen-Bradley PLC, the systems are monitored with FactoryTalk software.
Orion Weather Stations provide an all-in-one sensor configuration offering ultrasonic wind speed and direction, temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, as well as any combination thereof. Monitoring options include 4-20 mA signal interface, Weather MicroServer™ for additional SCADA and industrial protocols, and/or WeatherMaster™ Software.
